Capucins Market
The neighbourhood's covered market, between producers' stalls and counters where people eat standing from the morning on.
History
Capucins Market occupies a covered hall at the southern edge of the Saint-Michel district, by Place des Capucins. It is Bordeaux's big covered market, and it's a seven-minute walk from our front door. Locals simply call it "les Capus". Today it holds producers' stalls, fishmongers, greengrocers and several counters where people eat and drink standing shoulder to shoulder. It's a genuinely local market, visited as much by residents as by travellers curious to see another side of the city, away from the classical squares of the centre. It is open every morning except Monday.
What to see there
- The fish and seafood stalls, including oysters
- The counters where people eat and drink standing, from early morning
- The down-to-earth market atmosphere, less touristy than the classical centre
- The covered halls and their roof structure
Our tip
Come on a Saturday morning, oysters and a glass of white wine at the counter: it's the neighbourhood's rendezvous, not just a tourist stop.
